FLOAT Home: a vision and implementation plan for fabrication of the proven WindFloat® technology in the USA

The primary goal of FLOAT Home is to develop a vision and implementation plan for fabrication of the proven WindFloat® technology in the USA in purpose-built, low carbon, advanced manufacturing. The consortium will qualify existing infrastructure and work with the supply chain to develop optimized floating offshore wind project execution plans.

The project will quantify costs, risks, job creation, and environmental tradeoffs of various scenarios, providing valuable information to industry stakeholders such as state and federal government actors, non-governmental organizations, and labor, who will be essential partners in driving the new industrial revolution required to achieve ambitious floating offshore wind targets.

Main objectives:

  • to advance designs for floating offshore wind platforms for on-site manufacturing
  • improve the readiness of the supply chain to enable mass production and assembly of floating offshore wind projects in the United States
  • lower floating offshore wind associated costs and risks; and further the principles of job quality, inclusion, and environmental justice embodied in the Biden administration’s executive orders and Justice40 Initiative

Principle Power and Aker Solutions have unparalleled experience with series construction of floating wind turbines in Designer, EPCI, Execution Oversite, and O&M roles. This project provides us with an excellent opportunity to collaborate with government, developers, supply chain, and other stakeholders to establish industrialized supply chains that are ready to deliver American-Made WindFloat® projects

Aaron Smith, Chief Commercial Officer at Principle Power

Aker Solutions and Principle Power bring a unique breadth of capabilities to the sector. This project provides an opportunity for us to unite our joint capabilities to accelerate the development and deployment of offshore wind solutions at scale, drive further innovation and local investments, whilst contribute to the US ambitions of a decarbonized electricity grid by 2035 and a net-zero economy by 2050

About FLOWIN Prize

The Floating Offshore Wind Readiness (FLOWIN) Prize is the first-ever from the The Wind Energy Technologies Office (WETO) of the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE). A three-phase competition aimed at unlocking the 2.8-terawatt potential US floating wind opportunity through the development of cost-effective technology and competitive domestic supply chains. The FloatHOME consortium was one of the winners of the first round. The winners are eligible to compete in the second phase of the prize.
