Ralph Sahrmann, Principe Power’s General Counsel, has been named as one of the most influential people in the wind energy industry. The A Word About Wind-published Legal Power List ranks the top 100 lawyers that exert the most influence on the wind industry globally, through the deals they work on and the advice they provide. This includes lawyers at partner or departmental head level, as well as in-house general counsels and heads of legal.

Ralph receives this nomination in recognition of his pioneering work getting some of the world’s first floating offshore wind projects in the water, from the WindFloat 1 pilot project to the WindFloat Atlantic and Kincardine Offshore Wind Farm pre-commercial projects.

“I’m honored to be featured in the Legal Power List 2022 together with so many other legal innovators and industry leaders. I share this distinction with the entire Principle Power team, including our in-house legal department which worked very hard to support our engineering, business, and finance teams and deliver our projects from the days of proof of concept through technology demonstration to the deployment of the KOWL project amid a global pandemic”, Ralph said.  "Since I joined Principle Power in late 2010, we have successfully navigated many complex legal issues, across multiple jurisdictions around the world, to prove the effectiveness of our WindFloat® technology.  As we all work to mitigate the effects of climate change, achieve the Paris Agreements’ clean energy goals and support energy independence via clean energy, I’m excited to work with my legal team and be part of taking our technology to the next level”.

Joana Albuquerque, Senior Legal Counsel for Principle Power, who has been working with Ralph for a number of years now, added: “Ralph’s inclusion in this list is more than deserving. He is one of the most experienced lawyers in the world today in the floating offshore wind sector, with more than a decade pushing for the realization of this industry and the market leadership of Principle Power. We have much to thank him for employing his vast experience and encyclopedic knowledge of the law for the advancement of floating wind and, most importantly, for the clean energy transition. I feel very privileged to work with him and learn from him.”

Principle Power has been at the forefront of floating offshore wind development worldwide, particularly in Europe: the company has deployed its WindFloat® floating platform in Portugal, on the 25 MW WindFloat Atlantic project, and in Scotland, on the 50 MW Kincardine wind farm. Construction on the 30 MW EFGL project in France is due to start soon. With a multi-GW commercial pipeline globally, Principle Power is the market leader in floating offshore wind technology.

Ben Cook, lead editor of the 2022 Legal Power List, said: “As the wind industry has continued its rapid expansion, so the legal expertise available to the sector has been significantly enhanced. This year’s Legal Power List demonstrates how the depth of wind industry know-how found among private practice lawyers, in particular, has increased substantially. The result is that companies in the wind sector now have an array of top legal talent to choose from.”
